It doesn’t matter if you’re the Mom trying to keep track of all the digital images acquired every time you open your purse to pull out the camera or a pro who is trying to get home by 6 p. Workflow is more work than flow. Nikon is worried about that. Nikon’s Lindsay Silverman told us that while the company is primarily identified with the pro market, that’s a much smaller part of its business than the amateur market.

And that piece of the pie is getting a lot of attention lately. Every camera comes with some sort of image editing software but that hasn’t stopped the flow of options, no matter what brand camera you have.

All of those free options have some photo organizing and sharing options but as image editors they provide only what they have to provide in what they like to think are tools easy enough for a child to use.

While these tools make global changes easy to make — lighting or darkening a whole image, for example — making a change in just one part of an image is often obscure. Sure, you can eliminate red-eye or lighten a backlit subject but anything else gets tricky. If you want more control, you look up a shelf.

Except for Photoshop, each of these applications can edit without touching the original data, recording recipes in the metadata to affect changes when the image is opened.

None of these are free but they provide distinct advantages over the first group where user patience is short. Still, none of them are exactly transparent when it comes to making local corrections. Back to Contents. That may be because image editing itself is not something that comes naturally.

U Point is what we consider a Noble Prize worthy tool to do just that. You just point to a place in your image that you’d like to change and then, using nothing more than sliders, make an adjustment. This version of NX, we learned, makes it even simpler and a great deal more useful. Be forewarned that the interface isn’t very simple but once you understand which icon does what, it’s really easy to make big improvements to ordinary images that would take a doctorate in Photoshop to effect.

Installation was painless. We installed a version labeled 2. Unlike Photoshop, NX 2 does not quibble about your video card. There are a few Color Management Options to configure, too. You can tell NX 2 which working space to use when you open a file either that of the file or the default color space. And you can set that default color space, too, of course. You can run the product in trial mode or activate it.

To activate it, you enter the Purchase Product Key with your name and optionally your company. If you’re upgrading from version 1, you’ll need your version 1 product key as well. Selection Control Points : You can now selectively edit photographs without the need to manually outline or mask the area for editing.

Just place a Selection Control Point anywhere on the image, then choose from almost any adjustment like D-Lighting, Unsharp Mask or noise reduction. You can adjust the extent of that adjustment with its Size slider and its effect with its Opacity slider.

There are two U Point controls in NX 2. Click on an area of your image you don’t like with the Color Control Point tool and you see three things you can change with simple sliders:.

There are two other controls on the basic point. Above it is the S ize control or what I like to think of as the Sphere of Influence which determines how large an area to affect and below it is a triangle you can click to add a few more controls:. In addition to the S ize control, it has only a single option:. O pacity — Increase or decrease how much of the original image is visible through the modification. Of course, that’s only part of the Selection Control Point story. Once you’ve used a U Point to mask your image we’ve tried ’em all and this was the simplest mask we’ve ever made , you can apply any of 26 adjustments available in NX 2 to the affected area.

But of course, the U Point is the hands down winner. Try this once on a sky in which you want to pull the clouds out and you will never use photoshop again. Just to give you perspective, I use ViewNX for my batch processing and to screen shots. From their I use NX2 for the detail work. I do all of this in a self created file structure that I prefer because it is cross platform compatible.

Take the time to follow some tutorials online and you will see that there is much more power here than on first glance. This is such a great app, I just wish they would do the fit and finish of following the Windows Guidelines.

Program installation was a breeze. After just 10 minutes skimming the manual, I was improving photos that had resisted my best efforts in Photoshop. There are a number of excellent free video tutorials on the web, as well as several books, that show how to get the most out of the software.

The program isn’t intended to let you do the far out edits like putting somebody’s head on a different body ala Photoshop. But for tweaking your “just ok” photos into the excellent class it can’t be beaten.

When you start editing a file, the original image is never changed. All your changes are stored separately in the file. You can even have several versions of the same image in the file. Nikon lets you download a fully functional 60 day trial version.

This is the way to go if you’re not sure about the program. Before the trial period ends, you must buy the software and enter the product key to keep it functional. Capture NX2 is a great product but has a learning Curve! I have been using it for a while now and my pictures are looking a lot better. I still have a lot to learn with all it has to offer. I was using Adobe Lightroom 3 but wasn’t getting what I wanted.

If you buy this software read and learn all you can, their is so much you can do with it once you learn how. I have learned a lot from the Nikonians website and they offer a lot of help, you may want to go there to learn more very fast in their software forum. They are very helpful and take the time to explain how to do things and how to get to thing you never use but need to make your pictures look a lot better. You can ask questions on things you don’t know how to do and you will get answers right away.

If you have a Nikon camera this is a must. It’s not as fast as other software but I think you will see what I mean when you use it and want the most out of your pictures. Those after shooting, but in-camera changes, are not seen by other photo editing software. The basic editing for example, white balance controls or spot healing are great in Capture NX2, and advanced editing using the software’s U-Point technology is a lot better than creating a mask in Photoshop.

I received the product within a few days of ordering. The box contains the DVD and several resource books. The software loaded quickly and easily on my Mac. I started with the “Quick Start Guide” and it allowed me to experience several of the unique program features color control point, image enhancements, D-lighting, quick fix, selection control points, compare images, etc.

These are very fast, uncomplicated, powerful features that are much harder to duplicate with other imaging software programs. I have been a faithful user of Photoshop both full version and Elements for years.

NX2 has become my software of choice Apparently, this software will not load or run on newer Mac operating systems. I am waiting for customer support for answers. I have used several different apps for image processing and editing. I have mastered none of them because you have to make it a career to get great results, in my opinion.

I lose interest in things quickly so I needed an app that gave me quick results. NX2 does this for me and without having to read a manual. I found the interface a bit lacking at first because I was used to hunting for things in other apps.

I soon realized why the developers created the interface the way the did. As you work with NX2, everything you need is right in front of you. No menus to navigate. I really appreciate that as my attention wans with nested menus. The best thing I found was the non-destructive approach NX2 uses. You can easily remove the changes to files by undoing them without damage to the original file. Kind of like meta data. Over all, a great product.
